A Panorama of Sixteenth Century Florence under Francesco di Medici

Sixteenth century building activity in Florence is any thing but negligible. On the whole, new buildings and renovations considerably reduced the Medieval urbanistic continuity, especially on the environmental level.

The "grand ducal facades" changed the landscape, as it were of the old Medieval streets (Borgo degli Albizi, Via della Scala, Il Prato, Borgo Pinti, Via Romana, etc.) and squares (Santa Croce, Santo Spirito, Santa Maria Novella, SS. Annunziata). Even the facades of the churches (Santa Trinita) and mainly the interior changes with the installation of huge monumental altars correspond to this attempt at transfiguration.

From this point on "changes" in civil as in religious buildings would become the most common type of intervention during the XVII and XVIII centuries. Furthermore, the size of the area enclosed by the walls, more than enough for a population of 60,000 increasingly favored the development of a new equilibrium between architecture and green or free spaces, and the trend for smooth plastered or graffito facades with simple perimetral structures. The result was a new type of environmental continuity along the streets that were preferably wide and straight. This stupendous drawing marks a fundamental phase in the history of iconography in Florence. The figurative representation of the city as a single hierarchy, starting from the fifteenth century view of the "Catena" reaches perfection in this drawing. In Bonsignori's panorama, the method of axonometric perspective corresponds to the desire for an absolutely established hierarchy.

The evaluation of the general equilibrium and the parallel capacity for scientific analysis are carried to the limit. Each part of the city is visible in the same conditions, the streets take on an importance equal to the constructed volumes, consistently with the fact that the sixteenth century city was conceived as a dynamic relationship of streets. It is interesting to read Bonsignori's dedication: "To His Serene Highness the Grand Duke Francesco Medici. I have very diligently described the City of Florence in drawing; it is a city which, for its beauty and magnificence is worthy of being seen by all men. I am sending it to Your Highness in order that you be gratified to be prince and king of a city so noble and illustrious that celebrating it is superfluous; and that you may take pleasure in seeing the decorations made by Your Highness, your father and ancestors, loving it as benefactor and father, and may God always protect it. "

* In this statement, where the most significant parts are in Italics, is a key to understanding that the rigor of the axonometric method corresponds to the concept of order of the city-state, capital of Tuscany, imposed by Cosimo I. The interest in accurately recording the territory or individual features of the site, also corresponds to the climate of precision that reigned over Francesco's and Buontalenti's "scientific" experiments, Ligozzi's drawings and the semiprecious stone inlays, all of which can be related to the publication of the guides to Florence.

In 1510 Francesco Albertini published the Memoriale di molte statue e pitture della Citta di Firenze (A souvenir of many statues and paintings in the city of Florence). It was actually the first "guidebook" to the city. The only earlier ones were short notes in some fourteenth and fifteenth century chronicles. Examples are the remarks about Giotto and his followers in Filippo Villani's Cronaca and mainly Goro Dati's description of Florence.

A letter in the appendix to Disegno (1549) by A.F Doni contains a detailed program of a work Firenze illustrata, in 6 volumes that would be the first in a genre that later became highly cultivated in Italy. It had to be greatly illustrated with views of the city and its surroundings, and describe the buildings and monuments. One of the books was dedicated to festivals and entertainments. In 1591 Bocchi's Bellezze della citta di Firenze was published in 1591 and it was expanded by Cinelli in 1677. *The excerpts from Vasari and Bonsignori are freely translated from the Italian.

A Brief Introduction into Medieval Italy

Introduction - The last hundred years of the Western Roman Empire, from the second half of the 4C, coincided with large migrations of Germanic peoples (Visigoths, Vandals, Burgundians, Huns, Heruli, Alemanni etc.) who on different occasions settled within her territories. At the same time economic conditions also reflected the political instability of the imperial government, it deteriorated gradually and was accompanied by a chronic fall in population.

Already by the 5C the Italian population had been reduced to some six million inhabitants.

With the end of the Western Roman Empire the Italian territory remained basically united, first under the rule of Odoacer and then that of Theodoric the Ostrogoth (493-526). Under the latter, the country had periods of relative economic prosperity and peace. This was also due to the contribution of illustrious Romanists such as Boethius, Cassiodorus and Symmachus.

It was in this period that the influence of the Christian church began to make itself felt more consistently. This was in contrast to the progressive orientalization of the Empire, now focused on its new capital of Costantinople, founded by the emperor Constantine between 326-330 on the site of the ancient Greek colony of Byzantium. The Christian church sought to continue the authority and prestige of Rome. In particular there emerged the figures of popes such as Leo I (440-461) and Gregory the Great (590-604) who were capable of bringing prestige to the institution they represented. Under the latter in particular, the church also began to assume political and administrative functions due to repeated territorial acquisitions (St. Peter's patrimony).

Also at the end of the 4C there began to flower western monachism, with its major figure in St. Benedict of Nursia (480-543). The Benedictine monasteries and abbeys, but also those of other orders, became already in the early Middle Ages not only places of religion but centres for the preservation and spread of culture. In addition, they took an important economic role due to their schemes for the drainage and use of lands devastated and depopulated by recurrent war. The papacy, monasteries and other ecclesiastical institutions found themselves in possession of huge estates, often enlarged by further donations, that contributed to strengthen their political authority and power.

The deterioration in relations between Theodoric's successors and the Eastern Empire offered the emperor Justinian (527-565) the opportunity to re-unite the Empire.

This he did at the price of a difficult conflict, the Graeco-Gothic War (535-553), which had grave consequences for the Italian territory as it was placed under the government of the Exarchate of Ravenna.

Taormina Attractions

The origin of Taormina's name came from the Tauromenion (Greek) that is the shape of Taurus. Seems that the Sicilian, to which Dionisio of Syracuse had previously granted the earth around Naxos, had occupied Monte Tauro in the years of the Olimpiade of the 396 a.C. But the tyrant of Syracuse wanted to resume with violence the granted territory. Taormina remains under the tyranny of Syracuse until the domination of Rome, in the 212 a.C

Attractions:
The greek-roman theatre Going back probably to the III century a.C., the greek-roman theatre of Taormina is sure the largest in Sicily, after that one of Syracuse. It's supposed that it was built by the Greeks Tauromeniti and later re-built by the Romans. The greek-roman theatre is divided in three parts: the scene, the orchestra the cavea.

The scene is that part where the actors go on show. It has six bases of columns and four columns of corinzio style are.

The cavea is formed by the gradinate that left from the bottom and went salting towards the high where took place the spectators. The steps of the gradinate were dig in the cliff.
The orchestra is the flat part of the theatre. Here the singers were placed to develop the tragedy or the commedy where the actors recited.

Palazzo Corvaja Palazzo Corvaja was realized during the Arabic domination in Taormina. In fact its structure has in its base a tower that remembers the" Arabs the sacred"- “ Ka `bah”. It's the dice that, according to Maometto, was the first temple raised to God from Abrham to La Mecca. The palace was realized in the beginnings of 1400 in order to allow the reunions of the first sicilian Parliament of 1411. Currently Palazzo Corvaja is the center of the "Etno-anthropological" Museum in which are exposed objects from the art and traditions of the period comprised between the XVI and the XIX century.

The Dome The Dome was erected in the XIII century, but many of its structural members were added later on. It is the case, as an example, of the portal on the left flank that laughed to the ?400, and the ghotic style portal that laughed to the '500.

The park Column The park is property of the common from 1923. In its inside, there are not only native plants like carob trees, olive trees and almonds tree, but also plants coming from the exotic parts of the austral hemisphere, i.e. the Araucaria, the Calliandra and the Bahuinia.

Fluvial park of the Alcantara Taormina makes part of this protected area, but it is opened also to the Ionian see and dominates an immense landscape beyond the Etna. In the territory there are immense citrus groves. The beauty of this places make it a privileged center for the tourists.

Typical Products The typical products of Taormina are those diffuse in the zone comprised inside of the Etna park. Blue fish is however impossible to renounce too.
Festivities and events In the city are organized a lot of manifestations all the year. The most known are the Taormina film festival and the Taormina Art. They regards also music and theatre, in fact, in the summery months inside of the Greek theatre and the communal villa are organized numerous shows.

The David di Donatello Taormina Film Festival has been held for over fifty years, with international film stars viewing films on a screen erected in the Greek theatre.
Just south of Taormina is the Isola Bella, a nature reserve. Tours of the Capo Sant' Andrea grottos are also available. Taormina is built on an extremely hilly coast, and is approximately a forty-five minute drive away from Europe's largest active volcano, Mount Etna.

In 1927 the young Icelandic writer Halldór Laxness (born 1902) published his first major novel, Vefarinn mikli frá Kasmír (The Great Weaver of Kashmir), a panorama of social, literary, religious and sexual issues of his times. Laxness, who won the Nobel prize for literature in 1955, wrote most of his novel in Taormina which he then praised highly in his book of autobiographical essays, Skáldatími (The Time of the Poet) from 1963.

Between 1948 and 1999 the English writer Daphne Phelps lived in the Casa Cuseni designed and built by Robert Hawthorn Kitson in 1905, and entertained various friends includingBertrand Russell, Roald Dahl, and Tennessee Williams.

The present town of Taormina occupies the ancient site, on a lofty hill which forms the last projecting point of the mountain ridge that extends along the coast from Cape Pelorus to this point. The site of the old town is about 300 m above the sea, while a very steep and almost isolated rock, crowned by a Saracen castle, rises about 150 m higher: this is undoubtedly the site of the ancient Arx or citadel, the inaccessible position of which is repeatedly alluded to by ancient writers.

Portions of the ancient walls may be traced at intervals all round the brow of the hill, the whole of the summit of which was evidently occupied by the ancient city. Numerous fragments of ancient buildings are scattered over its whole surface, including extensive reservoirs of water, sepulchres, tesselated pavements, etc., and the remains of a spacious edifice, commonly called a Naumachia, but the real destination of which it is difficult to determine. But by far the most remarkable monument remaining at Taormina is the ancient theatre (the teatro greco, the "Greek theatre"), which is one of the most celebrated ruins in Sicily, on account both of its remarkable preservation and of the surpassing beauty of its situation. It is built for the most part of brick, and is therefore probably of Roman date, though the plan and arrangement are in accordance with those of Greek, rather than Roman, theatres; whence it is supposed that the present structure was rebuilt upon the foundations of an older theatre of the Greek period. With a diameter of 109 metres (after an expansion in the 2nd century), this theatre is the second largest of its kind in Sicily (after that of Syracuse); it is frequently used for operatic and theatrical performances and for concerts.

The greater part of the original seats have disappeared, but the wall which surrounded the whole cavea is preserved, and the proscenium with the back wall of the scena and its appendages, of which only traces remain in most ancient theatres, are here preserved in singular integrity, and contribute much to the picturesque effect, as well as to the interest, of the ruin. From the fragments of architectural decorations still extant we learn that it was of the Corinthian order, and richly ornamented. Some portions of a temple are also visible, converted into the church of San Pancrazio, but the edifice is of small size.

Taormina History

Taormina's coastal location, facing Greece, between the powerful cities of Syracuse and Catana to the south, and Messana (and behind it, mainland Italy) to the north, determined much of its history. It is only about 5 km from the site of the ancient Naxos, and there is no doubt that Tauromenium did not exist as a city till after the destruction of Naxos by Dionysius I of Syracuse, 403 BCE; but the circumstances connected with its foundation are somewhat confused and uncertain.

It appears, however, from Diodorus that after the destruction of Naxos, the remaining inhabitants of that city were driven into exile, and its territory was assigned by Dionysius to the neighbouring Siculi. These, however, did not re-occupy the site of the ancient city, but established themselves on a hill to the north of it, which was called the hill of Taurus (ὁ λόφος ὁ καλούμενος Ταῦρος). Here they at first constructed only a temporary camp (in 396 BCE), but afterwards erected walls and converted it into a regular fortress or town, to which they gave the name of Tauromenium. (Diod. xiv. 58, 59.) The place was still in the hands of the Siculi in 394 BCE, and they held it against the efforts of Dionysius, who besieged the city in vain for a great part of the winter, and though he on one occasion forced his way within the walls by a nocturnal surprise, was again driven out and repulsed with heavy loss. (Id. 87, 88.) But by the peace concluded in 392 BCE, it was expressly stipulated that Tauromenium should be subject to Dionysius, who expelled the greater part of the Siculi that had settled there, and supplied their place with his own mercenaries. (Id. 96.) From this time we hear no more of Tauromenium till 358 BCE, when we are told that Andromachus, the father of the historian Timaeus, brought together all the remains of the exiled Naxians, who were still scattered about in different parts of Sicily, and established them all at Tauromenium. (Id. xvi. 7.) This is related by Diodorus as if it were a new foundation, and even as if the name had then first been applied to the city, which is in direct contradiction with his former statements. What had become of the former inhabitants we know not, but there is little doubt that the account of this resettlement of the city is substantially correct, and that Tauromenium now for the first time became a Greek city, which was considered as taking the place of Naxos, though it did not occupy the same site. (Wesseling, ad Diod. xiv. 59.) Hence Pliny's expression, that Tauromenium had formerly been called Naxos (Plin. iii. 8. s. 14) is nearly, though not strictly, correct.

The new settlement seems to have risen rapidly to prosperity, and was apparently already a considerable town at the time of the expedition of Timoleon in 345 BCE. It was the first place in Sicily where that leader landed, having eluded the vigilance of the Carthaginians, who were guarding the Straits of Messina, and crossed direct from Rhegium (modern Reggio di Calabria) to Tauromenium. (Diod. xvi. 68; Plut. Timol. 10.) The city was at that time still under the government of Andromachus, whose mild and equitable administration is said to have presented a strong contrast with that of the despots and tyrants of the other Sicilian cities. He welcomed Timoleon with open arms, and afforded him a secure resting place until he was enabled to carry out his plans in other parts of Sicily. (Diod. l. c.; Plut. l. c.) It is certain that Andromachus was not deprived of the chief power, when all the other tyrants were expelled by Timoleon, but was permitted to retain it undisturbed till his death. (Marcellin. Vit. Thucyd. § 27.) We hear, however, very little of Tauromenium for some time after this. It is probable that it passed under the authority of Agathocles, who drove the historian Timaeus into exile; and some time after this it was subject to a domestic despot of the name of Tyndarion, who was contemporary with Hicetas of Syracuse and Phintias of Agrigentum. (Diod. xxii. Exc. H. p. 495.) Tyndarion was one of those who concurred in inviting Pyrrhus into Sicily (278 BCE), and when that monarch landed with his army at Tauromenium, joined him with all his forces, and supported him in his march upon Syracuse. (Diod. l. c. pp. 495, 496.) A few years later we find that Tauromenium had fallen into the power of Hieron of Syracuse, and was employed by him as a stronghold in the war against the Mamertines. (Id. p. 497.) It was also one of the cities which was left under his dominion by the treaty concluded with him by the Romans in 263 BCE. (Diod. xxiii. p. 502.) This is doubtless the reason that its name is not again mentioned during the First Punic War.

There is no doubt that Tauromenium continued to form a part of the kingdom of Syracuse till the death of Hieron, and that it only passed under the government of Rome when the whole island of Sicily was reduced to a Roman province; but we have scarcely any account of the part it took during the Second Punic War, though it would appear, from a hint in Appian (Sic. 5), that it submitted to Marcellus on favorable terms; and it is probable that it was on that occasion it obtained the peculiarly favored position it enjoyed under the Roman dominion. For we learn from Cicero that Tauromenium was one of the three cities in Sicily which enjoyed the privileges of a civitas foederata or allied city, thus retaining a nominal independence, and was not even subject, like Messana, to the obligation of furnishing ships of war when called upon. (Cic. Verr. ii. 6. 6, iii. 6, v. 19.)

But the city suffered severe calamities during the Servile War in Sicily, 134-132 BCE, having fallen into the hands of the insurgent slaves, who, on account of the great strength of its position, made it one of their chief posts, and were able for a long time to defy the arms of the consul Rupilius. They held out until they were reduced to the most fearful extremities by famine, when the citadel was at length betrayed into the hands of the consul by one of their leaders named Sarapion, and the whole of the survivors put to the sword. (Diod. xxxiv. Exc. Phot. p. 528; Oros. v. 9.) Tauromenium again bore a conspicuous part during the wars of Sextus Pompeius in Sicily, and, from its strength as a fortress, was one of the principal points of the position which he took up in 36 BCE, for defence against Octavian. It became the scene also of a sea-fight between a part of the fleet of Octavian, commanded by the triumvir in person, and that of Pompeius, which terminated in the defeat and almost total destruction of the former. (Appian, B.C. v. 103, 105, 106-11, 116; Dion Cass. xlix. 5.) In the settlement of Sicily after the defeat of Pompey, Tauromenium was one of the places selected by Augustus to receive a Roman colony, probably as a measure of precaution, on account of the strength of its situation, as we are told that he expelled the former inhabitants to make room for his new colonists. (Diod, xvi. 7.) Strabo speaks of it as one of the cities on the east coast of Sicily that was still subsisting in his time, though inferior in population both to Messana and Catana. (Strab. vi. pp. 267, 268.) Both Pliny and Ptolemy assign it the rank of a colonia (Plin. iii. 8. s. 14; Ptol. iii. 4. § 9), and it seems to have been one of the few cities of Sicily that continued under the Roman Empire to be a place of some consideration. Its territory was noted for the excellence of its wine (Plin. xiv. 6. s. 8), and produced also a kind of marble which seems to have been highly valued. (Athen. v. p. 207.) Juvenal also speaks of the sea off its rocky coast as producing the choicest mullets. (Juv. v. 93.) The Itineraries place Tauromenium 32 miles from Messana, and the same distance from Catana. (Itin. Ant. p. 90; Tab. Peut.) It continued after the fall of the Roman Empire to be one of the more considerable towns of Sicily, and from the strength of its position was one of the last places that was retained by the Greek emperors; but it was taken by the Saracens in 906 after a siege of two years, and totally destroyed.

In the late 19th century Taormina gained some prominence as the place where Wilhelm von Gloeden worked most of his life as a photographer of predominantly male nudes. Also credited for making Taormina popular was Otto Geleng, best known in his hometown of Berlin for his fine paintings, which he composed and painted in Italy but exhibited in Germany. What distinguishes Geleng, however, is his choice to depict the more southern regions where he captured the spectacular views and light of Sicily. He often painted the area's Greek colonial ruins, including Taormina.Taormina's first important tourist was Johann Wolfgang Goethe who dedicated exalting pages to the city in his book entitled "Journey to Italy," but perhaps it was Geleng’s views that made its beauty talked about throughout Europe and turned the site into a famous tourist center. The artist arrived in Sicily at the age of 20 in search of new subjects for his paintings. On his way through Taormina he was so enamoured by the landscape that he decided to stop for part of the winter. Geleng began to paint everything that Taormina offered: ruins, sea, mountains, none of which were familiar to the rest of Europe. When his paintings were later exhibited in Berlin and Paris, many critics accused Geleng of having an ‘unbridled imagination’. At that, Geleng challenged them all to go to Taormina with him, promising that he would pay everyone's expenses if he were not telling the truth.

During the early 20th century the town became a colony of expatriate artists, writers, and intellectuals. D. H. Lawrence stayed here at the Fontana Vecchia from 1920 to 1922, and wrote a number of his poems, novels, short stories, and essays, and a travel book, Sea and Sardinia. Charles Webster Leadbeater, the theosophical author, found out that Taormina had the right magnetics fields for Jiddu Krishnamurti to develop his talents, so the young Krishnamurti dwelt here from time to time. Halldór Laxness, the Icelandic author, worked here on the first modern Icelandic novel, Vefarinn mikli frá Kasmír.

1265-1321), Italian poet, prose writer, literary theorist, moral philosopher, and political thinker and one of the great figures of world literature, who was admired for the depth of his spiritual vision and for the range of his intellectual accomplishment. Dante was born in Florence between late May and early June 1265, into a family of the lower nobility. His mother died in his childhood, his father when Dante was 18 years old. The most significant event of his youth, according to his own account, was his meeting in 1274 with Beatrice, the woman whom he loved, and whom he exalted as the symbol of divine grace, first in La vita nuova (The New Life) and later in his greatest work La divina commedia (The Divine Comedy). Scholars have identified Beatrice with the Florentine noblewoman Beatrice Portinari, who died in 1290 aged barely 20. Dante caught sight of her on three occasions, but never spoke to her.

Little is known about Dante's education, although his works reveal an erudition that encompassed nearly all the learning of his age. He was greatly influenced by the works of the Florentine philosopher and rhetorician Brunetto Latini, who appears as an important figure in The Divine Comedy. Dante is known to have been in Bologna in about 1285, and he may have studied at the university there. During the political struggles that occurred in Italy at this time he initially supported the faction known as the Guelphs against the party known as the Ghibellines (see Guelphs and Ghibellines). In 1289 he was with the Guelph army of Florence at the Battle of Campaldino, in which the Florentines triumphed decisively over the Ghibelline armies of Pisa and Arezzo. At about this time he married Gemma Donati, a member of a prominent Florentine Guelph family.

La Vita Nuova Dante's first important literary work, La vita nuova, was written not long after the death of Beatrice. It is composed of sonnets and canzoni woven together with a prose commentary. The work narrates the course of Dante's love for Beatrice, his premonition of her death in a dream, her actual death, and his ultimate resolve to write a work that would be a worthy monument to her memory. La vita nuova clearly exhibits the influence of the love poetry of the Provençal troubadours and represents the finest work of the dolce stil nuovo ("sweet new style") of contemporary Florentine vernacular poetry. It transcends the Provençal tradition in that it not only describes the poet's love in terms of a lofty idealism but suggests a spiritual significance in the object of his adoration. La vita nuova, in its sustained intensity of feeling, is one of the greatest verse sequences in European literature.

Dante's Political Life During the next few years Dante was active in the turbulent political life of Florence. Records dating from 1295 indicate that he held several local offices in that year. He was sent on a diplomatic mission to San Gimignano in 1300 and later the same year was elected one of the six priors, or magistrates, of Florence, a post in which he served for only two months. The rivalry between the two factions within the Guelph party of Florence, the Blacks, who saw in the pope an ally against imperial power, and the Whites, who were determined to remain independent of both pope and Holy Roman Emperor, became intense during Dante's tenure. At his urging, the leaders of both factions were exiled in order to preserve peace in the city. Through the influence of Pope Boniface VIII, however, the leaders of the Blacks returned to Florence in 1301 and seized power. In 1302 they banned Dante from the city for a period of two years and fined him heavily. Failing to make payment, he was condemned to death should he ever return to Florence.

Dante's exile was spent partly in Verona and partly in other northern Italian cities; he reached Paris between 1307 and 1309. His political beliefs underwent a pronounced conversion during this period. Eventually embracing the cause of the Ghibellines, he hoped for the unification of Europe under the reign of an enlightened emperor.

During the early years of his exile Dante wrote two important works in Latin. De vulgari eloquentia (Concerning the Common Speech, 1304-1305) is a treatise on the uses and advantages of the Italian language. It defends the vernacular as a literary medium, attempts to establish certain criteria of good usage in written Italian, and concludes with a section devoted to criticism of Italian poetry. The unfinished Il convivio (The Banquet, c. 1304-1307) was intended to be a digest, in 15 books, of all the knowledge of the time. The first book was to be introductory, and the remaining 14 were to take the form of commentary on 14 poems by Dante. Only the first 4 books, however, were completed.

Dante's political hopes were strongly aroused by the arrival in Italy in 1310 of Henry VII, King of Germany and Holy Roman Emperor. Henry's purpose was to bring Italy under his sovereignty in fact as well as in name. In a feverish burst of political activity, Dante wrote to many Italian princes and political leaders, urging them to welcome the emperor and entreating them to look upon Henry's suzerainty as a means of resolving the bitter strife among and within the Italian cities. Henry's death in Siena in 1313 brought Dante's hopes to an abrupt end. The Latin treatise De Monarchia (c. 1313, On Monarchy), probably written during the period of Henry's stay in Italy, is an exposition of Dante's political philosophy, including the need for a supranational Holy Roman Empire, as well as for complete separation of church and state.

Last Years In 1316 the city of Florence invited Dante to return, but the terms offered him were those generally reserved for pardoned criminals. Dante rejected the invitation, maintaining that he would never return unless he were accorded full dignity and honour. He continued to live in exile, spending his last years in Ravenna, where he died on September 13 or 14, 1321, and was buried. His remains have been kept there despite appeals over the centuries from the Florentines, who have maintained a cenotaph for him in the Church of Santa Croce.

Among the minor works written during the last years of Dante's life are the Quaestio de acqua et terra (Question of Water and of Earth) and two Latin eclogues. The former is a cosmological treatise, in Latin, dealing with a matter of great concern to contemporary thinkers: whether the surface of the sea or of any body of water is higher at any point than the surface of the Earth. The eclogues are modelled after those of the Roman poet Virgil, whom Dante considered one of the most important influences on his thought.

The Divine Comedy Dante's epic masterpiece, The Divine Comedy, was probably begun around 1307; it was completed shortly before his death. The work is an allegorical narrative, in verse of great precision and dramatic force, of the poet's imaginary journey through hell, purgatory, and heaven. It is divided into three sections, correspondingly named L'inferno, Il purgatorio, and Il paradiso. In each of these three realms the poet meets with mythological, historical, and contemporary personages. Each character is symbolic of a particular fault or virtue, either religious or political; and the punishment or rewards meted out to the characters further illustrate the larger meaning of their actions in the universal scheme. Dante is guided through hell and purgatory by Virgil, who is, to Dante, the symbol of reason. Beatrice, whom he regards as both a manifestation and an instrument of the divine will, is his guide through paradise.

Each section contains 33 cantos, except for the first section, which has, in addition, a canto serving as a general introduction. The poem is written in terza rima (third rhyme), a three-line stanza rhyming aba, bcb, cdc, etc. (see Versification). Dante intended the poem for his contemporaries and thus wrote it in Italian rather than Latin. He named the poem La commedia (The Comedy) because it ends happily, in heaven, his journey climaxed by a vision of God and by a complete blending of his own will with that of the deity. The adjective divina (divine) was first added to the title in a 1555 edition.

The work, which provides a summary of the political, scientific, and philosophical thought of the time, may be interpreted on four levels: the literal, allegorical, moral, and mystical. Indeed, part of the majesty of this work rests on its multiplicity of meaning even more than on its masterfully poetic and dramatic qualities. It is supreme as a dramatization of medieval Christian theology, but even beyond that framework, Dante's imaginary voyage can be understood as an allegory of the purification of one's soul and of the achievement of inner peace through the guidance of reason and love.

Influence and Inspiration By the 15th century many Italian cities had established professorships for the study of The Divine Comedy; in the centuries following the invention of printing, almost 400 Italian editions were published. The poem has always inspired artists. Editions have appeared illustrated by the Italian masters Sandro Botticelli and Michelangelo, the English artists John Flaxman and William Blake, and the French illustrator Gustave Doré. The Italian composer Gioacchino Antonio Rossini and the German composer Robert Schumann set parts of the poem to music, and it formed the subject of a symphonic poem by the Hungarian composer Franz Liszt. It has been translated into more than 25 languages. Among the many notable translations into English are verse renditions by the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1867), and, in the 20th century, by the English writer Dorothy L. Sayers and the American poet and critic John Ciardi. The work of modern poets throughout the world has been inspired by Dante and imbued with Dantean imagery, especially that of Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot, Gabriele D'Annunzio, Paul Claudel, and Anna Akhmatova.

Enrico Caruso

(1873- 1921), Italian dramatic tenor, born in Naples. He made his debut in Naples in 1894. His first great success was in Milan in 1898 when he created the role of Loris in Fedora by the Italian composer Umberto Giordano. Engagements followed in St Petersburg, Rome, Lisbon, and Monte Carlo, where his 1902 performance in La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini with Nellie Melba established his international reputation. He made his Covent Garden debut the same year in Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi. In 1903 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, also in Rigoletto. His repertoire included more than 40 operas (chiefly Italian). He created roles in Adriana Lecouvreur by the Italian composer Francesco Cilea and The Girl of the Golden West by Puccini. He is especially remembered for the role of Canio in Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo.

From his first appearance, Caruso became the chief attraction of the Metropolitan Opera House, his voice being one of extraordinary beauty and power. One of the first singers to make phonograph records, Caruso became universally famous by means of the new medium. Several of his recordings were successively reissued in new formats and remain available today. His position as the pre-eminent dramatic tenor was unchallenged to the end of his life. Caruso's last appearance was at the Metropolitan Opera House on December 24, 1920. In 1987 the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences recognized Caruso with a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Maria Montessori

(1870-1952), Italian educator and doctor, born in Chiaravalle, and educated at the University of Rome. She is best known for the Montessori method of teaching young children, introduced to Rome in 1907. Her method, which has since spread throughout the world, stresses the development of initiative and self-reliance by permitting children to do by themselves the things that interest them, but within strictly disciplined limits. A wide variety of special equipment of increasing complexity is used to help direct the interests of the child and hasten development.

When a child is ready to learn new and more difficult tasks, the teacher guides the child's first endeavours in order to avoid wasted effort and the learning of wrong habits; otherwise the child learns alone. It has been reported that the Montessori method has enabled children to learn to read and write much more quickly and with greater facility than has otherwise been possible. Her writings include The Montessori Method (1912) and Advanced Montessori Method (1917).

Fra Angelico

(c. 1400-1455), Italian painter of the early Renaissance, who combined the life of a devout friar with that of an accomplished painter. He was originally called Guido di Pietro and was named Angelico (Italian "angelic") and Beato (Italian "blessed") because of the calm, religious subjects of his paintings and because of his extraordinary personal piety. Fra Angelico was born in Vicchio, Tuscany. He entered a Dominican monastery in Fiesole in 1418 and about 1425 became a friar, using the name Giovanni da Fiesole. His teacher is unknown, but he apparently began his career as an illuminator of missals and other religious books.

His earliest paintings were altarpieces and other panels; among his important early works are the Madonna of the Star (c. 1428-1433, San Marco, Florence) and Christ in Glory Surrounded by Saints and Angels (National Gallery, London), which depicts more than 250 distinct figures. Among other works of that period are two paintings of the Coronation of the Virgin (San Marco and Louvre, Paris) and a Deposition and Last Judgement (San Marco). His mature style is first seen in the Madonna of the Linen Weavers (1433, San Marco), which features a border with 12 music-making angels.

In Florence and Rome In 1436 the Dominicans of Fiesole moved to the monastery of San Marco in Florence, which had recently been rebuilt by Michelozzo. Fra Angelico, sometimes aided by assistants, painted many frescoes for the cloister, chapter house, and entrances to the 20 cells on the upper corridors. The most impressive of these are the Crucifixion, Christ as a Pilgrim, and Transfiguration. His altarpiece for San Marco (c. 1439) is one of the first representations of what is known as a Sacred Conversation: the Madonna flanked by angels and saints who seem to share a common space.

In 1445 Fra Angelico was summoned to Rome by Pope Eugenius IV to paint frescoes for the now-destroyed Chapel of the Sacrament in the Vatican. In 1447, with his pupil Benozzo Gozzoli, he painted frescoes for Orvieto Cathedral. His last important works, frescoes for the chapel of Pope Nicholas in the Vatican, are Scenes from the Lives of SS Stephen and Lawrence (1447-1449), probably painted from his designs by assistants. From 1449 to 1452 Fra Angelico was prior of his monastery in Fiesole. He died in the Dominican monastery in Rome on March 18, 1455.

Fra Angelico combined the influence of the elegantly decorative Gothic style of Gentile da Fabriano with the more realistic style of such major Renaissance artists as the painter Masaccio and the sculptors Donatello and Ghiberti, all of whom worked in Florence. Fra Angelico was also aware of the theories of perspective proposed by Leon Battista Alberti. Fra Angelico's rendering of devout facial expressions and his use of colour to heighten emotion are particularly effective. His skill in creating monumental figures, conveying a sense of motion, and suggesting depth through the use of linear perspective, especially in the Roman frescoes, mark him as one of the foremost painters of the Renaissance.

Born and brought up in the small seaside resort of Rimini on the Adriatic Coast, Fellini moved to Rome in 1939 where he made a living as a journalist and caricaturist. Entering the Italian film industry as a scriptwriter and assistant director in the early years of Neo-Realism, he was co-director (with Alberto Lattuada) on Luci del Varietà (1951; Variety Lights) before progressing to sole direction with the comedy Lo Sceicco Bianco (The White Sheik) in 1952. International recognition came with La Strada (1954) and The Nights of Cabiria (1957), both of which starred his wife, Giulietta Masina, as (respectively) a waif-like circus performer brutalized by the troupe's leader (Anthony Quinn) and a naive but spunky prostitute. The huge commercial success of La Dolce Vita (1960) gave him the freedom to make Otto e Mezzo (1963; 8½), a film about the creative dilemmas of a film director, still regarded by many as his masterpiece.

Having thoroughly shaken off the legacy of Neo-Realism, Fellini began a series of highly personal explorations of his experiences and fantasies. Fellini's Roma (1972) was a satire on his adoptive home, while in Amarcord (1973) he returned to his adolescence in his native Rimini. Nostalgia for the remembered past and an increasing distaste for aspects of the modern world (from the women's movement to a culture dominated by television) provide the impetus for his later films, including Prova d'Orchestra (1979; The Orchestra Rehearsal), La Città delle Donne (1980; City of Women), La Nave Va (1983; And the Ship Sails On), Ginger e Fred (1985), and Intervista (1987), but his creativity and his ability to merge personal obsession with reflections on the nature of cinema remained undiminished

He was one of the most important artists of his time, breaking with the formalism of Byzantine art, then predominant in Italy, and introducing a more lifelike treatment of traditional subjects. He was the precursor of the realism that developed in the early Renaissance Florentine school of painting founded by Giotto, and he is believed to have been Giotto's teacher.

Among Cimabue's works are Crucifix (c. 1260, San Domenico, Arezzo) and Madonna and Child Enthroned (c. 1285, Uffizi Gallery, Florence). He also made a mosaic of St John (Pisa Cathedral) and, with assistants, painted fresco cycles of saints and apostles and scenes from the Apocalypse in the upper and lower churches of San Francesco in Assisi.
